Device Options for Duo 2FA

NOTICE: Beginning Monday, November 14, 2022, all users of Duo will no longer have access to the “Call Me” option when authenticating. All other options are still supported.

In order to setup DuoTwo-Factor Authentication (2FA), you will need access to a second device to authenticate with. Although Murray State highly recommends using your mobile phone, you also can use a tablet (iPad, Android tablet, etc), backup passcodes, or a security key (YubiKey, Feitian, etc.).  MSU uses the DUO Mobile app for authenticating with mobile phones and tablets.

Mobile Phone

  • iOS - The DUO Mobile app currently supports iOS 11.0 and newer.
  • Apple Watch - Apple Watch support requires DUO Mobile version 3.8 or newer.
  • Android - The DUO Mobile app currently supports Android 7.0 and newer. DUO does not provide official support for non-standard custom Android distributions like OnePlus, LineageOS, or ColorOS, nor is Duo Mobile supported for use on ChromeOS.
  • Windows Phone - Although users may still enroll and authenticate, DUO no longer provides support for the DUO Mobile on Windows Phone app.

Things to know

  • DUO recommends making sure you always update to the latest version of the DUO Mobile app.
  • When setting up the DUO Mobile app, make sure to enable notifications from the app on your device.
  • Additional information on using DUO Mobile on devices can be found in DUO's guides.

Cell Phones

DUO works with all cell phones supporting authentication via SMS codes.

NOTE: Cell phones must have the ability to receive an SMS code if you choose that option. Message and Data Rates may apply.

Backup Passcodes

Murray State highly recommends generating and printing your backup passcodes from within myGate as soon as possible. These backup passcodes will allow you to set up a new device in the event your current device has been lost or stolen. MSU has provided instructions for generating and using backup passcodes.

Security Keys

Murray State users may purchase a security key to use with DUO for authentication. These security keys are USB sticks that, when plugged into a USB port, will allow you to authenticate into myGate, as long as you are using a supported browser.

Supported Browsers
Currently, DUO supports Chrome 70 or later, Firefox 60 or later, or Opera 40 or later.  Your browser must allow DUO's inline browser prompt. For the most updated list of supported browsers, view DUO's Security Keys guide.

Supported Security Keys
WebAuthn/FIDO2 security keys from Yubico or Feitian are good options. U2F-only security keys (like the Yubikey NEO-n) can't be used with Firefox.
