Change the MAILTO default option in web browsers

Body

Article Purpose:
This article provides steps needed to change the default application that opens when an email address link or MAILTO link is clicked in a web browser. This article will answer questions like "Why won't Chrome open RacerMail to send emails?" and "How can I make Chrome send emails through MSU email?" and "I don't want email links to open in Outlook?"

Issue

When clicking on an email address link in a web browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge), one of three things may happen:

  • a pop-up widow may be displayed asking you to select an app
  • Outlook or another mail client or web browser may open
  • nothing may happen

Solution

First, tell Windows how to handle the "mailto" links

SITUATION 1: If you click an email address in your browser and the below window pops-up, choose Google Chrome

A screenshot of a Windows pop up window that asks the user to "select an app to open" when clicking on the mailto:link

SITUATION 2: If nothing happens or the wrong web browser or mail client opens when you click an email link, then...

In Windows, click the Windows icon on your task bar, type or open Settings

Click Apps then Default apps.

On the Default apps page, in the "Enter a file type or link type" box, type MAILTO, and then click the MAILTO search result that pops up.

In the screenshot above, Google Chrome pops up first, but if you wish to change this to another browser, or a different browser or email client is displayed, click that and choose Chrome or another browser. Chrome is always recommended as the browser for accessing your Murray State University Google account (for mail, drive, calendar, etc).

You can close Settings when you are finished. You may need to restart your browser for the changes to take effect.

Second, update your protocol handlers

In Chrome's address bar, type chrome://settings/handlers and a new page will open up

Under Default behavior, make sure "Sites can ask to handle protocols" is selected, and clear out any entries under "Not allowed to handle protocols" by clicking the X next to those entries.

Close this tab.

Third, set Google Mail as your default handler

In Chrome, go to your Google Mail inbox, and on the right side of the address bar, you should see an overlapping double-diamond icon. Click that to set Gouge Mail as your default email handler. If you don't see the icon, you may need to close all your Google Chrome windows and tabs and relaunch Chrome.

In the pop up right below, click Allow and then Done

NOTE: If you accidentally select Deny or Ignore, repeat the second step to update your protocol handlers.
