Respondus LockDown Browser (for Students and Instructors)

Summary

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When students use Respondus LDB they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading.

Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When students use Respondus LDB they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading. It is available for both Windows, MacOS, and ChromeOS.

Students:

Installing LockDown Browser:

  1. If you haven't previously installed LockDown Browser, login to Canvas and access the assignment that requires LockDown Browser. Click the "Download LockDown Browser here" link.
  2. Locate the downloaded file on your computer to install LockDown Browser. This will install a LockDown Browser shortcut

To start a test in LockDown Browser on Windows or MacOS (after install):

  1. Close all programs, unless one is used to connect to the Internet.
  2. Locate the “LockDown Browser” shortcut on the desktop and double-click it. (For Mac users, launch “LockDown Browser” from the Applications folder.)
  3. If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging) choose Yes when prompted.
  4. Login to your Canvas course.
  5. Navigate to the quiz and select the "Take a Quiz" link.
  6. Once a quiz has been started with LockDown Browser, you cannot exit until the Submit Answers button is clicked

To start a test using Lockdown Browser on a Chromebook:

  1. Login to Canvas and navigate to the quiz/test you are attempting to take.
  2. Click "Take This Quiz" link.
  3. Lockdown Browser will open in a new tab.
  4. Once a quiz has been started with Lockdown Browser you cannot exit until the Submit Answers button is clicked.

NOTE: You cannot take more than one assignment in a row with LockDown Browser. If you need to take multiple exams, please close Lockdown Browser and reopen the application.

Instructors:

If you copy quizzes from a previous semester, the copied quizzes need to be re-activated in the Lockdown Browser Dashboard.

For each quiz that you wish to use LockDown Browser and webcam with:

  1. Click on the LockDown Browser menu option to the left in your Canvas course.
  2. Click on the gray icon to the left of the quiz title.
  3. Click on "Modify Settings"
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the gray box to click on the "Save and Close" button.
