On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the new myGate redesign went live! The new design provides accessibility and security enhancements, is mobile friendly, and has a more intuitive design. This article provides information related to the updated design, including information about error messages, and some tips and tricks that may help you understand the new design.
Navigation
Upon your first login, you will be presented with some helpful navigation information screens.

Cards
All information and links within myGate are organized by "cards." Each card may have information, links to another source, images alerts, or announcements specific to that card. Cards are organized by categories for quick navigation and easy searching.

Categories
(Previously called "tabs.") At the top of the screen are categories (Home, Academics, CampusLife, Employee, Resources, etc.) The categories displayed to you correspond with your role at the University. All current employees will see the "Employee" category. All current and incoming students will see the "Academics" category. Faculty and other teaching staff will see the "Teaching/Advising" category.

Main Menu
The main menu can be accessed from the "hamburger" icon (three horizontal lines) on the far left. Clicking this icon will bring up the left navigation menu. Clicking any category will take you to a list of cards for that topic. Clicking the Main Menu icon again, and then clicking "Home" will take you back to category navigation bar.

View All Cards/Search
On the far right, you can click "VIEW ALL CARDS" to see every card available to you, as well as a search option to search for a specific card, or all cards related to a keyword.

Error Messages or Issues
"Session expiring."

For security purposes, your myGate session will expire after one hour. You will receive the above warning as you near the time limit. Clicking "CONTINUE" will extend your current session for an additional hour.
"There is a temporary data retrieval problem. Some cards may not be visible at this time. Please contact your IT help desk."

This error will usually display during a regular maintenance window (Sunday mornings). Although myGate is still available and accessible, some information and links inside myGate may not be available or viewable if Banner or our MSU network is undergoing maintenance.
I am missing the Academics tab or Academics category.
I am missing the Employee tab or Employee category.
I am missing a card in myGate that I think I should have access to.
Academics tab, category, cards - If you are a currently enrolled student, or are admitted for a future term/semester, you should see the "Academics" tab or category near the top of your myGate screen.
Employee tab, category, cards - If you are a current employee, you should see the "Employee" tab or category at the top of your myGate screen..
If you are missing one of the above, there are several things you can check for.
First, check that you are on the correct screen inside myGate. Click on the three horizontal lines icon in the upper left of the logo. In that menu, you should see the appropriate categories. If the Student or Employee category is missing from that side bar, students can contact the Office of the Registrar and employees can contact the Human Resources office for additional information.
Second, check that you have the correct myGate role. Click on the blue circle icon in the upper right of your screen, and then click on "View Profile." On the next page, click on "Roles" toward the right. If you see the "student" role, you should have access to the Student category and all related cards. If you see the "employee" role, you should have access to the Employee category and all related cards. If you see either role but still can't find what you are looking for, please use the "All Cards" found in the top left menu (by selecting the three horizontal lies icon) or the "VIEW ALL CARDS" from the myGate Home page. If the Student or Employee category is missing from that side bar, students can contact the Office of the Registrar and employees can contact the Human Resources office for additional information.
