About this article
This article contains instructions for enrolling your device for Duo the first time you are logging in.  Further down, we have provided some helpful next steps to improve your Duo experience, as well as troubleshooting and support information.

Enrolling your initial device

On the login screen for any MSU system, enter your Murray State username and then password.

On the next screen, you will see the “Welcome to Duo Security” box. Click Next.

Duo will present a few security statistics. follow the prompts to the next option screen.

On the option selection screen, Murray State's recommended method is to setup the DUO mobile app on your mobile device to send you push notifications. However, on initial enrollment, make sure you choose a device that you have access to at that moment.

Choose the correct device option and follow the instructions on the screen.

  • Duo Mobile (recommended) - Select this option for a mobile phone (or tablet) that supports the Duo Mobile app. This will allow you to authenticate using either the DUO mobile app via a push or a code in the app.  See the Duo Mobile Option Walkthrough below for additional instructions.
    • From this option, you can also use a tablet to set up Duo Mobile
  • Security Key- Select this option to use a USB security key you have purchased. More information about USB security keys can be found on Duo's support page
  • Phone Number - Select this option to have a text message with a code sent to your mobile device. This is best for phones that do not support the Duo Mobile app.

  • Once confirmed, you'll see a confirmation screen, and then be taken to the "Added Duo Mobile" screen. Now you can use this device to receive Duo pushes or text messages, as well as one-time passcodes from the Duo Mobile app. Click Continue.

From this point forward, anytime you access your Murray State account, you will be prompted for a Duo Push, a  passcode from a text message, or the one-time passcode seen in your Duo Mobile app.

Duo 2FA Tips, Assistance, and Support

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Tired of having to authenticate with Duo on your personal and frequently-used devices? When authenticating, make sure you click the Yes, this is my device. Duo will remember you on that browser on that device for 30 days. If you access your MSU account on another browser or another device, you will be prompted again.

  • Duo relies on browser cookies to authenticate properly and to remember your device. If you have cookies disabled or blocked, you may not be able to authenticate into your MSU account, or your browser won't remember your device for 30 days.
  • Missing Duo pushes?
    • If you get a new phone but have the same phone number, you can follow the instructions in our Reactivate Duo Mobile article.
    • If you aren't receiving pushes to your mobile device and you are using the same device you always have, please make sure your notification settings are still enabled so that you see the prompts. You may have to open the Duo Mobile app to see the prompt.
