Migrate RacerMail to a Gmail Account

If you leave the university or graduate, your email account will be subject to deletion based on our current email policy (see the Accounts, Usernames, and Passwords Guide article). If you need to keep any personal email from your RacerMail account, you can create a personal Gmail account and move your email to the new account.

Step 1: Create a personal Gmail account 

if you don't already have one. Go to www.gmail.com and click on Create An Account. Proceed through the process until you have created a new email account and password.

**You may also be able to import email from your RacerMail account into Yahoo, Windows Live and other email services. Please check with your email help center for more details.

Step 2: Migrate Your Email and Contacts

Option 1: 

This option works well for transferring email and Drive data. 

  1. Log into your RacerMail Account. 
  2. Click on the RacerMail button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Click Manage your Google Account
  4. In the box that says 'Transfer your content', click Start transfer
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to transfer your content to a personal Gmail account. 

Option 2: 

This option works well for downloading data from Google apps, such as Youtube or Photos. 

  1. Sign into your RacerMail account.
  2. Navigate to https://takeout.google.com/
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions for downloading your content. 

Option 3: 

  1. Go to www.gmail.com and log in with the email username and password created in step 1.
  2. Click on the options "cog" icon to the right of the screen. Select Settings.
  3. Click on the Accounts and Import tab.
  4. Click on Import mail and contacts.
  5. A pop-up box will guide you through the following steps.
    1. Enter your Racermail email address (example: jdoe@murraystate.edu)
    2. Enter your Racermail email password. 
    3. Pop username is your full email address (example: jdoe@murraystate.edu)
    4. Pop server address is pop.gmail.com
    5. Click edit next to Port and enter 995. Make sure Use SSL is checked.
    6. Continue through the wizard until you receive a message that the import has begun.

Migrating Contacts

If your Google Contacts don't migrate successfully, you might need to do an export/import of your Google Contacts.

From the "Add, move, or import contacts" Google help page: (See "Import contacts", then "From a Gmail account")

Step 1: Export existing Gmail contacts

  1. On your computer, go to Google Contacts
  2. On the left, click More and then Export.
  3. Select the contacts to export.
  4. Select Google CSV.
  5. Click Export.
  6. At the top right, click your profile picture and then Sign out.


Step 2: Import the file

  1. On your computer, go to Google Contacts, then sign in with your other Gmail account.
  2. On the left, click More and then Import.
  3. Click CSV or vCard file and then Select File.
  4. Choose your file.
  5. Click Import.
