Activating Microsoft 365 on a Mac

Students attempting to use Microsoft 365 (Office) on a Mac device need to go through extra steps in order to edit documents.

NOTE:  If you came to Murray State with Office 365 already installed on your computer, you will likely need to uninstall that installation first. Restart your computer, and then go through the below steps. 

Activating Office on a Mac

Step 1: Visit RacerNet and click on the large Microsoft Office banner on the right side.

Step 2: Enter your Murray State email address into the box.

Step 3: Choose the "I'm a student" option.

Step 4: Sign in with your Murray State credentials.

Step 5: Once you arrive at the main Office 365 site, open your Word application to the main screen.

Step 6: Click on your picture in the top left corner and choose sign out.

Step 7: Click the sign in button in the top left corner and sign in with your Murray State credentials.

Step 8: Once you've signed back in, click on the key icon in the bottom left labelled "Activate".

Step 9: Sign in with your Murray State account again.

If you are still unable to edit a document after following these steps, proceed to the section below.

 

Clearing saved Microsoft accounts

Sometimes old Microsoft accounts used on a Mac can interfere with adding a new one. In this case, Microsoft provides an application that removes all saved Microsoft accounts from the computer.

Step 1: Close all running Office applications.

Step 2: Download the License Removal Tool from Microsoft's website.

Step 3: Open the program and follow the directions to remove any saved credentials from your computer.

WARNING: This will remove all saved Office credentials from your Mac. For most users, Office is linked to their Microsoft account and this won't do much. However, if you have an older version of Office that uses product keys instead, make sure you have a copy of that product key before deleting the credentials. If you're unsure, call the Service Desk at (270)-809-2346.

Step 4: Restart your computer.

Step 5: Open Word and sign in with your Murray State account.

Step 6: If you see an "Activate" button in the lower left corner, click on it and sign in again.

If you are still unable to edit documents, please call the Service Desk at (270)-809-2346 for further assistance.
