Setup Backup Passcodes for Duo 2FA

Tags mygate 2FA

What are backup passcodes?

There may be times when you don’t have access to your mobile device or are unable to use your mobile device to authenticate into your Murray State account. This is where backup passcodes are important. Without them, you’ll be locked out of any system that uses your Murray State credentials.

Murray State highly recommends generating and printing your backup passcodes as soon as possible. These backup passcodes will allow you to set up a new device in the event your current device has been lost or stolen.

Generate Backup Passcodes

Go to the myGate login screen and enter your Murray State username and password, and then authenticate with DUO.

Once inside myGate, click on the blue GENERATE PASSCODES button in the "Account Services" area. A new window will open with a list of 10 passcodes. You can click the Print button to print the passcodes for your records.

NOTE: Each backup passcode can only be used once. Please keep track of which passcode you have used. You can return to this screen to generate more passcodes. However, generating a new list of passcodes will void any previous passcodes.

Use a Backup Passcode

When you are prompted to authenticate with DUO when accessing your Murray State account, click Enter a Passcode. If you have set your account to push notifications to your device automatically, you may need to click Cancel before the option becomes available.

Enter a backup passcode from your list and click Log in. Once you've used a passcode, mark it off your list as each passcode can only be used once.
